Abstract: This report presents plasma-spectroscopical investigations of an a.c.-arc in methane, which were performed within the frame of studies about pyrolysis processes leading to the formation of pyrolytic carbon. The one- and twoatomic plasma-components are investigated in their spatial behaviour with the time. Parameters are the current strength (8 and 12 A ) , the electrodes' gap (2 and 4 mm) and the methane filling pressure (25, 50, 100, 170, 250 mm Hg). With the help of the concentration behaviour of C$_{2}$ and CH conclusions are available about their chemical activity. For measuring the temperature the rotational states of appropriate radicals are investigated for a Boltzmann distribution. The measurements of the temperature are also performed in their spatial distribution with the time-dependency on the plasma parameters. The thermal state (for example at local thermal equilibrium) should give a possibility for a fundamental theoretical description of the plasma. The electron-density as a fundamental electrical parameter will be determined in dependency on the plasma parameters from the Hg-line by line-broadening methods. Further electrical parameters are estimated there from: electrical conductivity, electron temperature, ionization temperature. In the plasma chemical irreversible processes were detected explicitly by the deposit of pyrolytic carbon on a carbon-filament. The deposit will be characterized by the methods used in pyrolyticcarbon-characterization.
